Engeland, de veertiende eeuw. Nicolas, een priester op de vlucht, sluit zich aan bij een rondtrekkende groep acteurs. De spelers, onder leiding van de charismatische Martin, arriveren in een klein stadje waar zojuist een vrouw ter dood veroordeeld wordt voor hekserij en moord. Ze besluiten daarop hun gebruikelijke Bijbelse opvoeringen achterwege te laten en zich te laten inspireren door de misdaad en de veroordeling. Tijdens het spel komen ze er al snel achter dat de bewoners van het plaatsje heel goed weten dat de veroordeelde vrouw de moord niet gepleegd heeft.
