Een bioscoop-operateur (Buster Keaton), die in zijn vrije tijd 'studeert' voor detective, is verliefd op een jonge vrouw (Kathryn McGuire). Hij probeert haar voor zich te winnen middels chocolaatjes en een verlovingsring. Echter hij is niet de enige die in haar is geïnteresseerd. Wanneer hij een aanzoek wil doen, steelt zijn rivaal het horloge van haar vader (Joe Keaton) en beschuldigt hem van de diefstal. Teleurgesteld keert hij terug naar zijn werk waar hij in slaap valt en droomt dat hij Sherlock Holmes (Jr.) is, proberend het mysterie te ontrafelen.
