Samen met zijn jeugdvriendin en schrijfster Harper Lee (Sandra Bullock) probeert de nog jonge schrijver Truman Capote (Toby Jones) achter de toedracht te komen van de moorden op vier leden van een rijke familie in Kansas in 1959. Aanvankelijk lijkt het een onschuldig onderzoek te zijn, maar al snel neemt het een onverwachte wending : er ontstaat een intense en ingewikkelde relatie tussen de schrijver en de twee veroordeelde moordenaars, Dick Hickock en in het bijzonder Perry Smith (Daniel Graig). Het duo zit op dat moment in de dodencel te wachten op hun doodstraf. Dit alles levert hem dan wel weer de inspiratie op tot zijn boek 'In Cold Blood'.
